At the federal party conference in Essen, Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla were elected as the leaders of Alternative for Germany (AfD) for another two years. Almost 83 percent of the delegates voted for Chrupalla, while almost 80 percent voted for Weidel. The election process was marked by harmony, with no surprises or contested candidates competing for the top positions.
During her speech at the conference, Weidel strongly criticized the established parties and the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution. She referred to Germany as having “degenerated into a pony farm” and called on the traffic light government to call for new elections. Weidel also accused the Office for the Protection of the Constitution of being an enemy of the constitution and called for its abolition in its current form.
However, outside the conference venue, around 50,000 AfD opponents gathered peacefully, according to police. Despite this peaceful protest, there were instances of violence and disruptive actions reported by police, with several officers injured and demonstrators arrested. Some party members faced difficulties reaching the conference venue due to protests and blockades.
Despite these disruptions, Weidel and Chrupalla were confirmed as leaders of AfD for two more years during their peaceful election process at Essen’s conference center.
