The recent announcement by the Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing (HCPF) that doula service coverage will be added to Health First Colorado Medicaid members has brought hope to pregnant and parenting individuals in the state. This new benefit aims to improve maternal health outcomes and provide emotional, physical, and informational support before, during, and after childbirth.
Doulas are non-clinical professionals who have undergone extensive training in the field of childbirth, providing support to pregnant or new mothers throughout the birthing experience. Studies show that doula support can lead to reduced epidural use, shorter labor duration, lower rates of low-birthweight deliveries, preterm births and postpartum depression. Additionally, doula care can help reduce c-section rates which are higher in the Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) population and contribute to morbidity and mortality.
This addition of doulas covered under this benefit will enhance access to care for Health First Colorado members and help close health disparities. HCPF is currently enrolling doulas who have formal training or prior demonstrated experience in the field. Interested individuals can find more information on their website about applying to become an HCPF doula.
This move by HCPF underscores their commitment to providing equitable, accessible and supportive services for an empowering birthing experience for Health First Colorado members. With this new benefit, pregnant and parenting individuals can look forward to a more positive birth experience with the support of trained professionals who will be there every step of the way.
