Summer Sickness on the Rise in Israel: Causes, Prevention, and Treatment

During the summer months, Israelis have been experiencing a range of flu-like symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, exhaustion, runny nose, muscle aches, and cough. This illness is believed to be caused by a combination of viruses and bacteria spreading in the community.

Community doctors and emergency rooms have reported a surge in cases of this sickness, with some patients requiring hospitalization for dehydration. The illness affects individuals of all ages, including babies, children, young adults, and the elderly. Even soldiers have been affected by this wave of illness.

The spread of pathogens during the summer is thought to be related to the use of air conditioning in closed environments. Air conditioning can decrease humidity and dry out mucous membranes, making it easier for viruses and bacteria to enter the body. To prevent infection, it is recommended to wash hands frequently, cover coughs with the elbow, ensure adequate ventilation in air-conditioned spaces, and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen.
