Regan Smith, World Record Holder, Removes Name From Transfer Portal

Regan Smith, a freshman swimmer at Stanford University, has withdrawn from the NCAA transfer portal. This move indicates that she is no longer actively seeking a transfer. Sources close to the situation have revealed that the NCAA ruled Smith ineligible as a professional athlete, leading to her withdrawal from the portal.

Smith had an impressive performance during her freshman season at Stanford, winning the NCAA title in the 200 backstroke and placing second in the 200 fly and third in the 100 back. She contributed 53 individual NCAA points to help her team secure a third-place finish. After completing her freshman year, Smith turned professional and began training under Bob Bowman at Arizona State University. However, Bowman transitioned to Texas Longhorns and continues to train Smith under his guidance.

Smith’s decision to enter the transfer portal earlier this offseason generated headlines due to her accomplishments and potential impact on NCAA competition. By withdrawing from the portal, Smith has clarified any questions regarding her eligibility status, professional athlete designation, and remaining years of eligibility.

In her most recent competition at Pro Swim-San Antonio, Smith won multiple events, including the 100 back, 200 back, and 200 fly events while also placing fourth in the 100 fly. Her strong performances reaffirmed her goal of making an impact at future international competitions such as the Paris Olympics following her silver medal win at last summer’s World Championships.
