The Power of Massage, Exercise and Nutrition: How Overeating Affects Digestion and What You Can Do to Alleviate It”.

Overeating can have a significant impact on digestion, according to Dr. Vu Truong Khanh, head of the Department of Gastroenterology at Tam Anh General Hospital in Hanoi. When we consume more food than our bodies need, it can put pressure on the stomach and affect intestinal motility. This can lead to slow gastric emptying, excessive stomach acid secretion, and reflux.

One way to alleviate the discomfort caused by overeating is through light exercise like walking. Engaging in physical activity after a meal promotes digestion and prevents acid reflux. Instead of lying down immediately after eating, it’s recommended to engage in gentle exercise that moves food through the digestive system more efficiently and reduces symptoms of bloating and discomfort.

Massage movements can also be beneficial for reducing bloating and indigestion. Massaging the abdomen from left to right and working upwards towards the ribcage can stimulate digestion and relieve discomfort after overeating.

In addition to exercise and massage, certain foods can support digestion. Green tea and herbal teas like ginger tea can stimulate saliva, bile, and gastric juice production, promoting better digestion. Yogurt with beneficial bacteria can balance intestinal flora, regulate bowel movements, and improve overall digestive health. Drinking warm lemon water can also stimulate hydrochloric acid production for better digestion after meals.

Reducing stress is crucial for maintaining a healthy digestive system as well. Stress and emotional factors can contribute to overeating and other digestive issues. Practicing mindfulness while eating, focusing on meals instead of distractions like TV or social media, eating slowly with chewing thoroughly are all habits that promote better digestion and reduce the risk of gastrointestinal problems.

Overall engaging in light exercise or massage movements along with supporting your gut with nutritious foods like green tea or yogurt with beneficial bacteria will aid in reducing bloating
